Overview

The SAT measures reading, writing and maths skills for undergraduate admission. It is taken on a laptop or tablet in the Bluebook app at a supervised test centre. Each section is adaptive, so the second module is easier or harder depending on how you did in the first.

Who it is for

  • Students applying for undergraduate study in the United States
  • Students applying to universities elsewhere that accept SAT scores
  • Students applying for scholarships that ask for SAT scores
  • A-level, IB, FSc and Matric/Intermediate students planning to study abroad

Versions

SAT (weekend)

The standard SAT taken on a national test date at a test centre. The same dates apply in the US and internationally.

Where it is accepted

  • Undergraduate admission at universities in the United States
  • Undergraduate admission at many universities outside the US that accept SAT scores
  • Some university scholarship programmes

Always check the current requirements of the university, employer, regulator or visa authority you are applying to.

Scores and validity

Scoring
Total score 400–1600. Each section (Reading and Writing; Math) is scored 200–800. There is no pass mark; universities set their own expectations.
Validity
College Board does not set an expiry date. Scores are archived a year after you leave high school but can still be sent. College Board says scores over five years old may be less useful predictors. Each university decides how old a score it accepts.

How long results take is shown at the top of this page.
