Overview

TOEFL iBT measures academic and everyday English across reading, listening, writing and speaking. Since 21 January 2026 it uses a multistage adaptive design and reports scores on a 1–6 scale aligned to the CEFR. It is taken at a test centre or at home with a live proctor.

Versions

TOEFL iBT at a test centre

Taken at an ETS-authorised test centre.

TOEFL iBT Home Edition

Same test at home with a live human proctor. Not accepted for Australian visas.

  • Australian visas (test centre only, not Home Edition)
  • Professional licensing where the body accepts TOEFL

Total time: About 90 minutes of base test time; ETS advises allowing about 2 hours. No scheduled breaks. Times vary as the test adapts.

Scores and validity

Scoring
Four section scores and an overall score on a 1–6 scale in half-band steps, aligned to the CEFR. Until January 2028, reports also show a comparable 0–120 score.
Validity
ETS states scores are valid for two years.

Fees

Fees are set by the test owner, were checked on 21 October 2026, and can change. Confirm the price when you book. GAPICT never takes exam fees.

On test day

Identification

An original, valid, government-issued photo ID matching your registration name exactly. Passport is the preferred ID and is required when testing outside your country of citizenship.

How to book

Exam seats for TOEFL iBT are booked and paid on the test owner's own system. Delivered through: ETS-authorised test centres (plus TOEFL iBT Home Edition).

    Create or sign in to your account on the official booking site.

    Choose your exam, then a test centre, date and time.

    Pay the exam fee to the test owner and keep your confirmation email.

    Check the ID rules and arrive early on test day.

What changed in January 2026?
From 21 January 2026, Reading and Listening became adaptive, new task types were added, the test became shorter and scores moved to a 1–6 scale.
My university asks for a score out of 120. What do I do?
Until January 2028, score reports also show a comparable 0–120 score. Check your university's current requirement.
Can I use TOEFL for a UK visa?
TOEFL is not on the UK Home Office list of SELTs. Many UK universities accept it for degree-level admission. Check with your university.
Is TOEFL accepted for Canadian immigration?
No. IRCC accepts CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core for Express Entry.
